How To Ease Your Baby's Pain After a Vaccination

It's March 9, 2016, Wednesday.  Vaccine time.  Khiarah's last dose of Pentavalent shot has been taken today.  We went back to the Health Center and I was expecting for one shot on the leg and an oral dose of Polio. During Khiarah's turn, she's been given as expected, but surprisingly, the nurse took another syringe and injected it to her left leg. She then told me it's Inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) which costs Php4000+ at the private clinics. And so Khiarah went home today with two injections on both left and right legs.

As we went home, she seemed bubbly at first, but after a few hours, she began crying. Tears flowed from her eyes like a crying grown-up and you could tell she's in pain. Her temperature rose from 35 (her regular temp) to 37.4.  Though this is her last shot for the Penta/Hexa series, it's her first time to feel much pain, probably because she was given two shots.  Good thing I have a list of contact numbers for pediatricians. I texted most of them, like a worried mother would, hoping there would be one response, at least.

Thank God they did, here's a quick remedy to relieve baby's pain:
  • Alternate hot and cold compress on the affected area.
  • Let baby take Paracetamol every 4-6 hours.

When Khiarah was a month old, a volume of 0.3 ml of Tempra was prescribed in case she's having fever.  But since she's turning 6 months old this March 16, the dose increased to 0.6 ml, still every 4-6 hours.

24-48 hours later, Khiarah has been able to raise both of her legs and started amusing herself again. Unlike a few days ago, she could hardly move and all she had to do was cry. Thank you, Lord!

As a parent, have you also experienced the same? Just remember, these tips are only guidelines. Better consult your child's pedia for recommended doses. Different doses, different babies. :)
